Welcome To Club Speranza

Club Speranza congratulates ABC 4 Corners on drawing attention to the significance of discussion in the
community around suicide and the effect on families left in its wake. This program has presented a
unique opportunity to gather important date about suicide in Australia and its effect on the families.

A Special Needs Survey
Club Speranza is inviting all those families who have experienced a suicide in the last five years and
particularly suicide in care as defined to contact us to register for a research project to examine the
consequences in the family in terms of PTSD, emotional, physical damage, and financial hardship. Suicide
in care is defined as when the person dies as an inpatient, on leave or within seven days of contact.
The main purpose for the collection of this data initially is to confirm the incidence of the failure of duty
of care and then follow up with a formal discreet private study into the effects on the family and to
evaluate their views on how the process of Open Disclosure is being pursued. Registration will enable
us to compare numbers state-by-state across Australia. The follow-on survey would examine “Suicide in
care” in terms of the failure of duty of care, the damage to families, the effectiveness of Open Disclosure
and any denial of human rights justice fairness and equity after the event

We know of many instances where there has been legal intimidation superficial empathy insincere
apologies all contributing to enormous trauma on the families and risking suicide perpetuation in these
aggrieved and afflicted families. We know that in NSW alone some 600 families have experienced this
unanticipated loss since 2008. It is important that we get this initial registration information quickly in
time for the First International Disclosure Conference to take place in Sydney 5/6/7th October
